Indiana Cherries: Pavolka Fruit Farm

A few weeks ago, with the full sunlight of the late afternoon, my Mom and I meandered through some back roads south of Michigan City, Indiana searching for Pavolka Fruit Farm, and the last cherries of the season.  It was July 4th weekend.  There we found one of the last surviving members of the Pavolka family running the farm, well into her 80’s, and a box of perfectly ripe cherries with our name on it.

In the yard, an ancient apple tree laden with still young apples.  An idyllic scene in the distant orchard, ladder left perched next to the still cherry trees.   A very large farm dog came to say hello.

We left that beautiful place, and took our cherries home – the cherries grew sweeter as they ripened, and my family spent the rest of the weekend eating cherries like popcorn.

With lots of heritage and new varities of apples grown every year, Pavolka Fruit Farm is a great place to visit. The farm also grows many other fruits.
