U-Pick Farms: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin

You can’t get any more seasonal and fresh than this.  Starting when we were kids and learned this skill from my Mom, who learned it from her Mom, and Aunts, etc., my Mom, sister’s and I still continue this practice today:  We rely on our little guidebooks for Michigan and Indiana farms, in which the approximate ‘ripeness’ dates for various fruits and vegetables are clearly listed.  A few weeks before the ‘season’ begins for any specific fruit or vegetable, we call the farms we have chosen as our favorites from year’s of perusing the countryside.  “How’s the crop this year?  When will you be ready for picking?”   There’s the pleasure of anticipation.  The kid’s love it – we joke about hiding our tongues after blueberry picking, or that the farmer should weigh us pickers before and after!  And making a wish the first time you taste this year’s fruit.  And then later, the canning, freezing, pickling, so the memories and tastes linger through the winter.

*Be sure to check out the ‘canning, preserving and freezing’ section in our COOKING category.  Always remember to call the farm first, before going out to visit them – to check hours, fruit ripeness, etc*
